North Carolina license plate laws you should know

Below are the four laws that most often trip up North Carolina drivers. Rules are enforced at the stop, the inspection station, and at registration renewal.

Single plate state

North Carolina requires only a rear plate on passenger vehicles under G.S. 20-63(d). One plate is issued per registration.

Front plate rule

No front plate is required. Decorative front plates are permitted as long as they do not impersonate an official plate or obstruct visibility.

Registration stickers & display

A month/year decal is affixed to the rear plate showing the expiration. Registration must be renewed annually and the current sticker must be visible (G.S. 20-66).

Inspection / smog check

North Carolina requires an annual safety and emissions inspection for most registered vehicles (G.S. 20-183.2). OBD-II emissions testing applies to 1996-and-newer gasoline vehicles in the state's urban counties with air quality concerns.

Types of North Carolina license plates

North Carolina issues dozens of plate designs. These are the main categories you'll encounter on the road or see at the DMV counter.

First in Flight (standard)

Default plate with the Wright Brothers' airplane on the Outer Banks; issued since 2001.

First in Freedom

Alternative standard design featuring a Revolutionary War soldier; free to choose at registration.

Personalized / Vanity

Up to 8 characters on any available background for $30/year.

Disabled / Disabled Veteran

ISA wheelchair symbol for qualifying disabilities; DV plates are free for 100% service-connected disabled veterans.

Military specialty

National Guard, Purple Heart, Pearl Harbor Survivor, POW/MIA, and branch-specific designs.

Special organization

University, wildlife, environmental, and cause plates — over 100 designs available through the NCDMV.
